Five Supplements for Good Gut Health

Published by Wonder Laboratories on Mar 31st 2025

The gut refers to the inside of the human intestinal system. In recent years, science has shown us that a healthy gut is integral for overall human health. Here, we talk about why that is, and discuss five of the best supplements for gut health and their specific benefits.

Why Gut Health Matters

The term ‘gut’ refers to the inside of the human intestinal system. Within your intestinal system is an ecosystem populated by trillions of bacteria and fungi. This is known as the gut microbiome. These bacteria and fungi, separate from other foreign microbes that could enter the body, serve constructive purposes for human health. They contribute to the digestion of macronutrients, immune functioning, hormonal health, and more.

The gut microbiome is so important to human health that some scientists view it as though it were an organ of its own. Various factors can cause the gut microbiome to become less-than-ideal or even disrupted. An unhealthy gut microbiome, called dysbiosis, is linked to a wide variety of different health issues For example, your diet has an enormous impact on your gut microbiome. A prominent way the gut of many individuals is affected is by frequent consumption of simple, processed sugars. Chemical toxins and other environmental factors can also affect the gut microbiome.

Dysbiosis in the gut microbiome is linked to many conditions including allergies, asthma, diabetes, fatty liver disease, rheumatoid arthritis, neurodegenerative diseases, and even anxiety and depression.

Supplements for a Healthy Gut

Certain nutrient and herbal supplements have properties that can greatly benefit the gut, and thereby improve your overall health as well. These are not a replacement for sound dietary and lifestyle choices that support gut health, but can make for a worthwhile addition to healthy diet patterns.

L-glutamine is the supplemental form of the amino acid glutamine, and it is one of the most recommended amino acids for gut health. L-glutamine is beneficial because it supports the fueling of intestinal cells. It can also help to combat “leaky gut” syndrome, which is a state wherein the intestinal lining is permeable, which can lead to dysfunction. Supplementing with L-glutamine daily can reduce this problem. L-glutamine could prove helpful for those who experience irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Probiotics: Probiotics are live microorganisms that can actually be ingested and live within the gut microbiome. Taking a probiotic supplement can directly benefit your gut microbiome, and it is highly recommended for anyone who experiences issues related to the gut. The probiotic bacterium Lactobacillus acidophilus is one of the most recommended probiotic microorganisms and is common to most probiotic supplements. Digestion and nutrient absorption could both be supported by regularly taking a probiotic supplement.

Psyllium husk is a natural plant-derived fiber that is available in powdered form. It can support gut health, most specifically the process of digestion. This plant-based fiber, when mixed with water, forms a gel-like substance in the gut, and it helps to smooth digestion and increase bowel movements, a benefit also called increased motility. It is best to take psyllium husk supplement with water or juice.

Vitamin C contributes to proper immune system functioning and many other bodily processes. As for the gut, taking vitamin C could be helpful because this vitamin can positively affect gut bacteria populations and help to reduce intestinal inflammation. Research shows that vitamin C can promote the flourishing of good bacteria, and reduce the presence of bad bacteria.

Magnesium is a mineral crucial for human health. Magnesium deficiency is relatively common, and this deficiency can catalyze the formation of bowel issues. Constipation and abdominal discomfort can occur due to magnesium deficiency. Taking a magnesium supplement can support bowel motility by drawing water into the bowel. Magnesium citrate is a form recommended for short-term use to support bowel movements, while magnesium oxide is a more gentle magnesium supplement.

Gut issues are wide-ranging. However, the benefits of these five supplements apply to some of the most common gut issues, and/or to improve overall gut health. Consider how these can help support your gut microbiome and overall well-being. It’s recommended that you talk to your healthcare provider before taking a supplement for the first time.
