This is our next installment in our Healthy Living series. In this blog, we’ll offer a two-parter of information with a simple common element in mind: the letter “L”. Throughout this blog series, we have condensed what would normally be two separate blogs into one power-packed set of particulars.
First, we’ll feature an “L” natural remedy and its benefits, and then offer an “L” single health need along with a few supplements that suitable for alleviating symptoms. We present this series to give our readers an opportunity to learn more information than they might otherwise get to learn just from scrolling through all of our content.
Natural Remedy: Lutein
Lutein is an organic, plant-derived pigment that is classified as a carotenoid. It is sometimes referred to as the “eye vitamin,” and for good reason. Lutein is one of two carotenoids which are also found in the human eye, specifically in the macula and retina. It is commonly taken for the prevention of eye diseases, which we will come back to in just a moment.
Lutein is healthful in part because it is an antioxidant. As a naturally occurring pigment, it is found in flower petals, bird feathers, and even egg yolks. It is also present in many leafy vegetables. Taking a lutein supplement is the quickest way to take in concentrated amounts of this healthy substance.
Benefits of Lutein
Eye health: Lutein supplementation benefits the eyes in more than one way. First, the antioxidant properties of lutein reduces the oxidative stress and inflammation which contribute to various eye diseases including glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration. Studies show that lutein also helps directly to combat the occurrence of age-related macular degeneration when taken consistently over a period of years. Other carotenoids such as zeaxanthin are also recommended in tandem with lutein for this benefit.
Cognitive health is also benefited by supplementing with lutein, according to research. Lutein has neuroprotective effects which could help preserve memory and cognition, and prevent neurodegenerative disease.
Heart health: The anti-inflammatory properties of lutein can benefit the cardiovascular system, contributing to long-term heart health. Lutein can also help reduce high cholesterol and triglyceride levels, two factors which also bode well for reduced risk of heart disease.
Health Condition: Laryngitis
Laryngitis is a condition wherein the larynx, or voice box, becomes inflamed. As a result, the vocal cords become swollen and do not function (vibrate) properly. Laryngitis is predominantly the result of one of a few factors: vocal overexertion, a bacterial or viral infection, or a candida infection in the larynx.
Laryngitis can be acute or chronic. Chronic laryngitis is any case that lasts longer than three weeks.
Most cases last 2 weeks or less. The foremost symptoms of laryngitis are a hoarse and/or weakened voice, or the loss of one’s voice entirely. Others include sore throat, a dry cough, and a feeling of rawness in the throat. Laryngitis will often pass in a matter of days with sufficient rest and hydration, but in prolonged cases, medications such as antibiotics might be prescribed.
Remedies for Laryngitis
Zinc lozenges: Lozenges for soothing the throat are helpful for a case of laryngitis, and this includes zinc lozenges intended for this purpose. Zinc lozenges are preferred by some for their ability to help reduce the irritating symptoms of laryngitis.
Garlic in supplement form could be taken in order to treat an infection which is causing laryngitis. The antibacterial properties in garlic combat infection, and can help remedy both it and the laryngitis associated with such an infection. A garlic supplement is the easiest way to consume garlic. For some, an oral garlic supplement is preferred over the strong flavor of this vegetable.
Ginger root is another natural supplement which could help remedy laryngitis in cases of infection. The antimicrobial properties of ginger root are what make it effective.
Licorice root is a traditional natural remedy for throat irritation, and it could be an effective help for symptoms of laryngitis.
This blog covers a lot of ground. We have taken a look at lutein and the benefits it could provide to the eyes and other aspects of your health, and also looked at the simple supplemental remedies which could help tame the effects of laryngitis. Consider how these could apply to you and your household. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking any supplement for the first time, since some products can interact with certain medications.
