Singing the Praises of Unsung Supplements, Part VI

Hundreds of supplement products are available on the market and over the counter, yet only a few (or perhaps one in some rare cases) might have the properties to meet a specific need that you have. This makes it possible to overlook lesser-known but effective products in favor of those which are more popular but perhaps less than ideal for your needs.

Here, for the sixth time in this series, we look at several underappreciated but effective supplements with specific applications. Among the four natural remedies we’ve chosen this time are natural products that can protect the heart, support the skin and joints, and more.

Four Unsung Supplements to Consider

Arjuna: The bark of the Terminalia arjuna tree, a deciduous evergreen tree found in India, this compound is known for its cardioprotective benefits. It contains Arjunic acid and Arjunolic acid, among other active ingredients. The history of Arjuna's use for medical reasons is long, and precedes its validation by modern science. Studies show that adults who have experienced myocardial infarction or ischaemic cardiomyopathy taking 500mg or more of arjuna daily experienced measurable cardiac benefits. In turn, this reduced the risk of complications that could lead to mortality. Specific heart benefits included improved diastolic function and left ventricle function. Taking 500mg of Arjuna multiple times daily was key for some of these benefits. These demonstrable benefits make Arjuna an effective (yet oft-overlooked) natural supplement for sustaining heart health after a cardiac event.

Forskholii (or, forskolin) is another supplement derived from plants native to India (as well as Thailand and Nepal). A foremost traditional usage of forskholii is that of relieving asthma. It has this ability because it supports the production of cyclic AMP, which helps the bronchial tubes to relax and makes breathing easier. This mechanism is similar to that of certain asthma medications, and by default makes it a worthwhile natural supplement for anyone who experiences asthma symptoms.

Hyaluronic acid is a natural acid produced in the human body, and it serves to both hydrate and lubricate particular skin-adjacent parts of the body, such as the eyes and joints. The properties of hyaluronic acid make it beneficial to take as a supplement for both the eyes and the skin. A unique source of hyaluronic acid is the mohawk found on a rooster. Taking hyaluronic acid can improve skin health and elasticity, keep the eyes hydrated, and potentially mitigate joint arthritic pain as well.

Lecithin is a type of fatty substance found in many plants, and it has properties that can regulate the body and support particular pillars of long-term health. Most lecithin supplements are made from soy. Taking a soy lecithin supplement can raise positive cholesterol and lower negative cholesterol. Doing so can also improve digestion in those with irritable bowel disease, because the natural phosphatidylcholine in lecithin is a component of mucus, which helps facilitate digestion. Soy lecithin also has properties that support the immune system, and it can also support memory and cognition. Consider taking concentrated soy lecithin because of its wide variety of potential benefits.

Do one of these supplements ring special to you, because of the potential benefits? If so, then keep this information in mind when you choose your next supplement to purchase. It is generally recommended that you talk to your healthcare provider first before adding any supplement, herb, or other type of natural remedy to your regimen.
