Arthritis isn't just for old people. This July, in honor of Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month, we're getting the word out about the 300,000 adolescents in the United States that have been diagnosed with juvenile arthritis (also known as JA or pediatric rheumatic disease ). Like the arthritis that affects more than 54 million American adults, juvenile arthritis can cause symptoms such as pain, joint swelling, and redness/warmth. However, unlike your typical adult case of arthritis, juvenile arthritis presents some additional symptoms that can affect the gastrointestinal tract, eyes, skin, and muscles. In some patients with doctor-diagnosed JA, there are none of the stereotypical arthritic symptoms.
