4 Natural Remedies to Consider for Treating Gout

Published by Wonder Laboratories on Aug 26th 2026

Gout is a particular form of arthritis that can affect specific joints in the body. Here, we look at the basic causes, symptoms, and treatments for gout. Then we discuss four natural remedies which could help to prevent and/or to mitigate the symptoms of gout.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis that can cause pain and swelling in joints. It is unique in that it most commonly affects the big toe. But gout can also affect other joints, including knees, ankles, feet, hands/fingers/wrists, and elbows.

Gout is one of the most common forms of arthritis, and it can affect almost anyone. Gout is the result of the buildup of uric acid within the body. Uric acid is produced naturally in the body. But, when it is not properly expelled by the kidneys or is produced in excess, it can lead to gout.

The symptoms of gout are periodic, occurring in flare-ups which can last up to a week or two and then subside. Symptoms can include pain and tenderness, a sensation of heat in the joint, swelling, stiffness, and skin discoloration.

Individuals with gout who seek medical treatment are often prescribed medication, either for the purpose of preventing gout flare-ups, or for mitigating their symptoms. But, many of these medications come with noticeable potential side effects. Lifestyle measures can reduce the complications of gout. One measure is to stay well-hydrated, and reduce or avoid alcohol consumption altogether. Another recommendation is to reduce consumption of foods high in purines, such as sardines or red meat, which contribute to uric acid buildup. Exercise and maintaining a healthy weight are also recommended.

Natural Remedies for Gout

Certain supplements of various types have properties which could help prevent gout and/or mitigate its symptoms. Here are four supplements which should be well-qualified to fulfill that role.

Vitamin C in the form of ascorbic acid is one of the frequently recommended supplements for the prevention of gout. Vitamin C is helpful because it functions as an antioxidant. A large-scale study on vitamin C in men published in 2009 showed that higher intake was associated with a lower risk of developing gout. Research on its benefits for those who already have gout are not as conclusive. But, some research suggests that those with gout could see reduced uric acid levels, and therefore diminish flare-ups in those with gout.

Fish oil containing omega-3 acids is recommended for mitigating symptoms of gout. This is because of the anti-inflammatory properties of omega-3 acids. Taking fish oil for its omega-3 fatty acids may actually be more effective than eating fish to get these acids. That is because purines in fish could potentially exacerbate gout. Highly-distilled fish oil should not contain purines.

Turmeric could be an effective herbal supplement for treating gout symptoms because of its anti-inflammatory properties. Studies on this application of turmeric have taken place, but more are necessary to reinforce its assuredness. However, this application of a turmeric supplement would likely work well, given its already-existent and well-supported usage for reducing the symptoms of other types of inflammatory arthritis.

Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is an organic supplement compound which helps form connective tissue. Per the American Academy of Pain Management, taking 3,000mg of MSM twice daily could decrease the inflammation which causes gout.

If you or someone you know experiences gout, then you should consider natural treatment along with other recommended lifestyle measures to combat it. Consider how these can help treat and even prevent gout (in the case of vitamin C). Talk to your healthcare provider before taking any supplement to help with gout.
