A meaningful addition to a healthy diet involves the proper utilization of herbs and spices for targeted health reasons. To understand more of how herbs and spices can bolster an already-healthy diet, take a look here at Part 3 of our series, “Healthy Herbs and Spices to Contribute to a Healthy Diet.” This time, we take a look at oil of oregano and parsley.

Herbs and Spices Contribute to a Healthy Diet

If you have been through health challenges and been keen and patient enough to develop good habits, then you know the value of maintaining a healthy diet. An ideal, healthy diet can be a little different for everybody. Herbs and spices are a complementary diet tool underestimated by many people. They are valuable not just for the flavor and complexity they add to dishes, but for the micronutrients that they provide.

Furthermore, to not merely add an herb or two, but also to consume a variety of herbs and spices, is where the most meaningful benefits are able to be realized. The phytochemicals contained in herbs and spices, which are unique in their nature and benefits, make variety in this realm especially beneficial. So, here is a look at the physiological benefits of oil of oregano and parsley.

Two Healthy Herbal Supplements

Oil of oregano is an herbal supplement made from the extract of oregano leaves. Typically, this extract is mixed with a carrier oil, such as extra virgin olive oil. Oil of oregano contains important active compounds known as carvacrol and thymol, as well as rosmarinic acid. (Before exploring the benefits of this product, it’s important to distinguish it from oregano essential oil, which is an entirely different product made through steam distillation, and not fit for oral consumption.) Oil of oregano possesses antifungal and antibacterial properties, which can defend against fungi such as Candida albicans and certain types of infections. Oil of oregano has also been shown to exert an anti-inflammatory influence by hindering the production of inflammatory molecules. Moreso, its natural properties could help in the management of blood sugar and cholesterol levels. For these reasons, oil of oregano is believed to be helpful to those who have or are at risk for diabetes.

Parsley is healthy first because it naturally contains a high amount of certain crucial vitamins, as well as other healthful compounds such as a variety of flavonoids and carotenoids. The generous amounts of vitamins A and C, along with these antioxidants, make parsley a worthwhile herb for preventing oxidative damage to cells. This is a very important benefit because it reduces the risk of heart disease, type II diabetes, and other serious long-term health issues. Parsley is also chock-full of vitamin K, which contributes to the formation of bone-building cells called osteoblasts, and the activity of proteins that increase bone mineral density. The research on these benefits acutely suggests that regular consumption of concentrated parsley increases bone health and reduces the risk of bone-related disease and susceptibility to fractures. You can find concentrated parsley combined with garlic in oral supplement form, or combined with vitamins and minerals for additional health benefits.

Oil of oregano and parsley, taken separately in concentrated supplement form, can provide staunch benefits when taken regularly and as part of a healthy diet. It is always recommended that you talk to your healthcare provider before adding any supplement to your dietary regimen.
