Supplements, Herbs, and Nutrients A-Z: Part 6 (W-Z)

Published by Wonder Laboratories on Mar 7th 2023

Here, we conclude our alphabetical tour through the supplements on the market, focusing on four supplements, each beginning with a W, X, Y, or Z. By reading this blog series, you will have been exposed to a range of unique supplements. In this blog, you will likely see at least one useful product that you have not heard of before. In this list, there are nutrient-rich, plant-based supplements, a dental supplement, and an essential mineral that has a myriad of uses.

W: Wheatgrass

This refers to the green leaves of a young wheat plant. This supplement can benefit you in a few basic ways. Wheat grass is an excellent source of chlorophyll, which gives it its vibrant green hue. Chlorophyll has prominent antioxidant qualities, and it could help retain oxygen in your body that you consumed. Wheatgrass contains enzymes, amino acids, and other nutrients. It could help reduce cholesterol and inflammation, and might also benefit the immune system, as well as red blood cells. A wheatgrass supplement can be found in tablet form or as a powder to add to water.

X: Xylitol

Xylitol is used in toothpaste to benefit the health of your teeth, not just their appearance. Xylitol is an unfermentable sugar alcohol (containing no fructose) that can, according to some studies, defend against the S. mutans bacteria. This bacteria is a primary contributor to tooth decay and the breakdown of enamel. Xylitol has been compared to fluoride as a defense against dental decay, and in some studies has been found to be more effective. In other contexts, xylitol serves as an artificial sweetener and alternative to sugar.

Y: Yucca

This refers to the yucca root, a starchy root that is grown and harvested in South America. Both the yucca root and yucca plant are valuable staple crops. These roots are highly nutritious, and for this reason yucca is harvested and made into a supplement. Yucca contains manganese (and a variety of other nutrients), making it useful in alleviating the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. Yucca can also contribute to skin health, and can work against oxidative stress. Yucca is sometimes found in complex-style supplements designed for joint health.

Z: Zinc

Zinc is an essential mineral to the human diet, meaning that it is vitally necessary and must be acquired (consumed) from outside sources. It plays multiple vital roles for cell health and DNA synthesis, as well as metabolic function. It's critically important during pregnancy, infancy, childhood, and adolescence. Supplementing with zinc has been shown to reduce the duration of colds. Sufficient zinc is important for the prevention of pneumonia, as zinc deficiency is strongly linked to susceptibility to pneumonia, particularly in children. Zinc can also slow the progression of age-related macular degeneration in your eyes. As you consider your specific health and dietary needs, and which supplements can be of help, the above four likely have something that can benefit you. It is recommended that you speak with your healthcare provider before using any of these dietary supplements for the first time, especially if you have intent to make it or them a part of your regular dietary regimen.
