Maybe fungus isn't the first word that comes to mind when you think of your health. However, many fungi available in your local grocery store have been found to boost the immune system, reduce inflammation, and help the body fight off viral infections. It's time to rethink mushrooms! Check out these four immune system-boosting mushrooms (including at least one you've heard of and maybe even incorporated into your own cooking: the shiitake mushroom).
Mushroom Complex (Maitake, Reishi & Shiitake Mushrooms)
- Maitake (Hen-of-the-wood, Grifola frondosa): Also known as cloud mushroom or ram's head, maitake mushrooms contain beta-glucan, a carbohydrate that appears in many foods you're already used to, such as oats and sorghum. When combined with shiitake mushrooms (below), maitake mushrooms can provide a boost to the immune system. A 2015 study found that healthy adults (age 21-41) who consumed these mushrooms over a four-week period enjoyed reduced inflammation and improved immunity.
- Shiitake: Ok, maybe your local grocery doesn't carry maitake, but you can probably find some shiitake mushrooms on the shelf! These meaty, savory mushrooms are unique in that they contain all eight essential amino acids, which are used to make protein and help the body repair itself.
- Reishi (Lingzhi mushroom): This mushroom is known to boost the immune system, fighting off viral infections (such as influenza), as well as helping with asthma, bronchitis, and other conditions.
